Lisbon was founded officially in 1255 but long before was already a stronghold for
the Moors, Visigoth and the Romans. After a prosperous period, the city was badly
hit by the earthquake on November the first, 1755. Because it was All Saints day,
many believed the tremor was divine intervention but Voltaire and like minded in
Europe concluded that it could be a natural cause only. This is were we find ‘Enlightened’
thinking taking over religious thinking for the first time.
